Throughout August a number of events are held around the globe to commemorate
the bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
AUSTRALIA
August 6, 2008 Hiroshima Day Morning Vigil - Melbourne The 63rd
anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima will be commemorated in Melbourne with
an early morning vigil organised by MAPW's Victorian Branch, with Pax Christi,
ICAN, Japanese for Peace and other peace organisations. 7am to 9am on the steps
of St Paul's Cathedral, cnr Flinders and Swanston streets. Please put aside some
early morning time to attend. Bring a very warm coat! Download our flyer to give

Nuclear Free My Cup of Tea - Flinders Medical Center, Adelaide Medical
students and doctors of Flinders Medical Centre will hold a Nuclear Free My Cup
of Tea public awareness raising event in the FMC coutyard. There will be cups
of tea and yellow cupcakes served. To find out more about Nuclear Free My Cup

August 9, 2008 Peace Concert - Melbourne
Town Hall Remembering Hiroshima & Nagasaki Japanese for Peace
have again assembled an inspiring line-up of performers in their annual peace
concert. MAPW is supporting this concert. Speakers are Councilor Jenny Farrar
(City of Yarra), Mayors for Peace and MAPW's Associate Professor Tilman Ruff.
Seven talented performers will present poetry, dance, and music ranging from didgeridoo
to dulcimer and the Okinawan sanshin. $15/$10. 3pm to 5pm Melbourne Town Hall,
after Saturday's peace rally. Follows peace rally starting from the State Library
at 1pm.
AUSTRIA
August 6, 2008 Hiroshima Commemoration - in front of St. Stevens Cathedral,
Vienna City Center The 5PM commemoration will be followed by a march
at 8:30PM from the city center with Japanese style lanterns. This event is organized
by the Vienese Peace Movement and Hiroshima Group of Vienna.
August 8, 2008 Genbaku no Hi Hiroshima / Nagasaki - Vienna International Center
(UN Vienna) Commmoration and call for a ban of nuclear weapons.

August 2-11, 2008 Dedication, presentations, exhibits, festival - several
location in Canada The Canadian affiliate PGS has several of the

FINLAND
August 6, 2008 Candlelight Ceremony - central lake of Helsinki City, Töölönlahti For
over 20 years, several peace organizations including PSR Finland, Peace Union
of Finland have held a ceremony around 9PM on the banks of a lake. Small lanterns
with candles are places on the water.
INDIA

Kurvey, President of IIPDEP will be speaking and the Peace Crane animation film
will be shown to school children.

Speakers, film, poster exhibition - Government Medical College, Nagpur, India
2 - 3PM Dr. Nalini Kurvey will be giving an introduction on IPPNW and Dr. Krishna
Kamble, Prof & Head of Radiotherapy Dept, Govt. Medical college, Nagpur will
be speaking on the medical impact of nuclear weapons and war. After the speakers,
there will be a screening of "Bombing Bombay".

8, 2008 Speakers, film - Raman Medical Centre, Nagpur, India Medical
students will be giving an introduction on IPPNW and its campaigns. There will
be a screening of the Peace Crane animation film and also a presentation by Dong
Nghi Phan, a German medical student at Nagpur.

9, 2008 Peace Demonstration - Variety Square, Nagpur, India There
will be a peaceful demonstration by medical doctors and students from 5-6PM on
the effects of nuclear weapons and war.

6, 2008 Memorial Service for health professionals - Hiroshima City The
Hiroshima City Medical Association commemorates the service of the doctors, nurses
and other health professionals who died on August 6th or as a result of radiation
exposure from the atomic bomb, devoting themselves to relief activities even while
they themselves suffered from the atomic bombing. The number of health professionals
in the city was 2390, including 298 doctors. 225 of those doctors died soon after
exposure.

Peace Park, Nagasaki City From 7PM to 8:30PM the Flame of Peace
organizing committee will be hosting a an event.

8-9, 2008 Young People Peace Forum- Nagasaki City For additional
information about the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, or to read peace appeals from

NEPAL August
6, 2008 Hiroshima Commemoration - National Theater school, Kathmandu Nepalese
students will hold a demonstrate against nuclear weapons and seek peace initiatives
through a dramatic play.
SWEDEN
August 6, 2008 Advertisement in Journal of Swedish Medical Association
Two papers have also been submitted, one on IPPNW's current role and another
paper on the effects of limited nuclear war on the climate and famine.

UNITED
STATES ongoing 2008 Photo exhibition - Lesley University, Cambridge,
Massachusetts Peaceable Schools Summer Institute at Lesley University
and the City of Cambridge Peace Commission, with the support of the SGI-USA is
sponsoring this exhibition of photographs from Hiroshima and Nagasaki. At
the July 1st opening reception for "Voices for Peace: The Legacy of Hiroshima
& Nagasaki" included a presentation by an Atomic Bomb Survivor.
