IPPNW
Aiming for Prevention Affiliate Initiatives
Physicians
and allied health professionals throughout the IPPNW federation are making the
case worldwide that "Guns are bad for health" and engaging in research,
education, and policy design and development to translate data into action to
prevent injuries and death from small arms and light weapons. They embrace as
a central theme the IPPNW-developed One Bullet Story
tool which has put a human face on the suffering of gun violence victims, and
describes the enormous costs to individuals, families, communities and economies.
The IPPNW Aiming for Prevention (AfP) campaign is linking all the
affiliates and enabling them to share best practices information, collaborate
on projects, and enhance other voices in the federation on this important global
public health issue. AfP supports our affiliates through Central Office
fundraising, communications, campaign materials, technical advice, training and
other resources.
Affiliates, members and students that have been leading
the way on the AfP campaign include those in the global South regions of
Central America, Africa, South Asia and the Pacific
who are active in their own and well as neighboring countries, and on the international
stage. They include the countries of El Salvador, Nicaragua, Democratic Republic
of Congo, Nigeria, Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, India, Pakistan, the Philippines and
New Zealand. Student participation in countries around the world from Ecuador
to Nepal are burgeoning under the banner of an International Student Coalition
to Abolish Small Arms organized by IPPNW and US/PSR student leaders. Global North
affiliates including those from the Canada, Norway, Finland, Germany and the United
States have been actively supporting the work of Southern affiliates with
financial and human resources, as well as student exchanges.
