Conference Report

9th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion
Merida, Mexico
March 15-18, 2008

IPPNW again had a strong presence at the 9th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion, the major international public health conference on injury prevention.

Highlights from the main conference include the following:
* IPPNW members from 6 countries had 13 papers and posters accepted - a significant contribution to the conference tracks of Violence, Building Capacity, and Advances on Injury Research and Surveillance. This bi-annual conference was attended by over 1000 delegates from around the world. See abstracts and posters of papers presented below. Most IPPNW members attending received full scholarships from the conference organizers.

Members spread the message that "Guns are bad for health" and made important contributions to other sessions in the Q&A segments, raising key critical health issues and responding to key points. They also made contacts with many other health professionals in an effort to build awareness for our work and to encourage capacity building for the IPPNW and public health networks.

IPPNW actively participated in a meeting of the World Health Organization's (WHO) Violence Prevention Alliance business meeting which focused on the Geneva Declaration and a call for development agencies to invest more funds in violence prevention. IPPNW was formally accepted as a VPA member in 2005.

IPPNW members attended and contributed to several other side meetings conducted by the World Health Organization.

Dr. Ime John, IPPNW co-president, was quoted in a press release issued by the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA). IPPNW coordinates the IANSA public Health Network.

A number of IPPNW delegates also participated in other events that were held during this time, including the second global meeting of the International Society of Injury and Violence Prevention, on whose board sits IPPNW/DR Congo's leader Dr. Simon Bokongo.

Ministers of Health from over 100 countries issued the Merida Declaration on violence prevention.
