ICAN Accomplishments
Some
of the most sustained ICAN activity at the national and regional level is taking
place in: - the UK, where IPPNW's affiliate Medact has convened a multi-NGO
coalition that is holding monthly organizing meetings, is actively promoting UK
government leadership on disarmament, and has launched a petition supporting a
Nuclear Weapons Convention;
- Australia, where the IPPNW affiliate, MAPW,
along with a 40-group ICAN coalition is pressing a new government to take stronger
and more principled stands on nuclear disarmament oand on uranium mining and export;
- Europe, where IPPNW-Germany is organizing a number of European affiliates
and disarmament NGOs around a campaign to eliminate US nuclear weapons from European
bases and to end the policy of nuclear "burden sharing" among NATO countries;
- the
US, where PSR has joined the coordinating committee of the US Campaign for a Nuclear-Weapons-Free
World; has successfully opposed Congressional funding for the Reliable Replacement
Warhead; has produced a joint statement with Indian Doctors for Peace and Development
(Indian affiliate of IPPNW) condemning the US-India nuclear technology agreement;
and is now poised to make a strong and vocal case for abolition in a rapidly changing
political climate that may soon be more receptive to the ICAN message.
A
first set of compelling ICAN materials has been produced and distributed to IPPNW
affiliates, NGO partners, and diplomats around the world. First and foremost is
a revised edition of the book Securing Our Survival, which contains the Model
Nuclear Weapons Convention and the case for its adoption. (SOS was delivered by
hand to every NPT Member State delegation at the 2007 PrepCom in Vienna, and continues
to be the focal point of meetings with nuclear decision makers around the world.)
SOS and other resources, including synopses of the Model NWC, videos, brochures,
fact sheets, and other teaching materials customizable for national distribution,
are available on the ICAN website (www.icanw.org). For more
