Guidelines:
1. Identify a gunshot survivor willing to contribute his/her story, be photographed during the medical management process, and have his/her story publicized – fully explain the process and its intent for educational purposes, and obtain a signed OBS consent form.
Using the OBS intake form template:
2. Obtain the individual’s socio-economic profile.
3. Obtain the circumstances that led to the incident – where, how, who was involved etc.
4. Collate the medical data and highlight the clinical challenges including rehabilitation.
5. Compute the medical costs.
6. Compare the costs of management with the local socio-economic data.
7. Describe the country or city’s crime/conflict status, with statistics if possible.
8. Take as many photos as possible describing each stage.
9. Describe the changes that have occurred due to the incident, or adaptive changes within the family. If possible, quantify costs to the family (job loss, psychological contributions, social disruption / fear of more violence), and society at large (development impeded by violence etc.).
10. Determine behavior that could be as a result of the incident – to illustrate coping mechanisms or salient response to physicial or social changes that have occurred.
11. Assist with referrals to social services or other support / rehabilitation agencies for ongoing support.
12. Visit the family and speak with the members on the challenges they face and how they are coping.
